"Land of Legends"---County residents adopted the name "Land of Legend" in 1967 after the Newark Area Chamber of Commerce launched a contest in August 1966. But what stories inspired such a mysterious moniker?
Dan Fleming, reference librarian at Licking County Library, said there is ample support for the motto that has become part of the county's identity.
"There's a lot of history around here, starting with the mounds. I think it's well-deserved," he said. Fleming has collected some of his own favorite historical anecdotes in "Six Cents and a Raccoon's Tail."
Legendary figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Buffalo Bill and Johnny Appleseed visited the county in its early years. The Ohio-Erie Canal got its start in Heath with Buckeye Lake joining the Canals, and its first canal boat reportedly was built in Hebron, and the National road running through the center of the County.
But much of the area's reputation as a land of legend was inspired by Native American stories and relics. Settlers wondered about the geometric mounds and stone Fort at Glenford, built by ancient people. They heard stories about the dark stain on Black Hand rock, and tales abounded about encounters with Giants, and between white settlers and Native Americans, and the mystery of the Holy Stones.
